CAMPUSBUILT / FOUNDER SCHOOL

Every great founder
was once a beginner.

You don't need an MBA, a funded startup or the perfect idea. Start with the basics. Turn a problem into a proposition you can explain.

01 / THE ESSENTIALS

Five lessons.
One clearer idea.

01THE STARTING POINTWhat makes an idea a startup?+

A startup looks for a repeatable way to solve a meaningful problem. Its first job is not to look impressive; it is to understand who has the problem and whether a proposed solution actually helps.

Try this: Write one sentence: “I help [specific person] solve [specific problem] by [your approach].” Avoid product features until you've described the problem clearly.

02REAL PEOPLE, REAL PROBLEMSFind a problem worth solving+

Talk to the people you think will use your solution. Ask them about a recent instance of the problem, what they did and what it cost in time, money or frustration. Don't ask only whether they “like your idea.”

Try this: Speak with three potential users. Write down what they already do to work around the problem and what surprised you.

03START SMALL, LEARN FASTBuild a test, not an empire+

Your first test might be a sketch, a clickable mockup, a simple service trial or a demonstration. Pick the lowest-cost experiment that reveals whether your main assumption is true.

Try this: Identify your riskiest assumption. Describe one test you could run within seven days, and define what result would change your mind.

04THE BUSINESS QUESTIONWho benefits—and who pays?+

Users and customers may be different people. A useful product is a beginning; a sustainable venture also needs a credible way to deliver value while covering costs. Early numbers should be framed as hypotheses, not facts.

Try this: List who uses your idea, who might pay, your biggest cost and one assumption you still need to verify.

05TELL THE STORYMake a pitch people remember+

Strong pitches are clear before they are clever. Describe the problem, your solution, the audience, the proof you have and what you need next. Be transparent about what you haven't tested.

Try this: Use Pitch Lab below. Read your result aloud in under one minute; remove every sentence that doesn't make the idea clearer.

02 / THE FOUNDER WORKBENCH

The Pitch Lab.

Shape your idea into a useful first pitch. Your words remain on this device unless you decide to copy or download them.

03 / TAKE IT FURTHER

Your idea deserves
a real audience.
